Living in the Country, No Alarm Clock Needed!

“The Pileated woodpecker is the largest living woodpecker in North America. Both male and female pileated woodpeckers sport a red crest; the female’s forehead is brownish and the male’s is scarlet.” Often you will spot this type of woodpeckers around bird feeders or other areas of your garden. Pileated woodpeckers are well known for the noise they make! The males drum against metal flashings, metal signs, and on concrete to notify the female its breeding season. The woodpecker shown above prefers to make noise as soon as the sun comes up in the morning. Then, he flies to every metal flashing on my roof to make noise for at least an hour!

Another common noise maker in Woodinville are the roosters. Many people in this country town have chickens and roosters in their backyard. You can often find roosters along the Sammamish Trail. Along the trail, multiple roosters and chickens walk freely with no formal home. “Once the roosters start calling, they cannot be stopped. It is a kind of a crowing contest and anything can trigger them like a car arriving, a phone ringing, a dog’s barking and even the chiming of bells or a clock chiming. They make different sounds too that convey different messages. They growl at other roosters to threaten them or to keep them in line. They have warning calls to that help others to become conscious about the presence of a predator or a hawk.”

Clearly, alarm clocks are not needed in Woodinville, Washington.
